About That Name

First, about the title. It's a line from R.E.M.'s Cuyahoga, which is a decent song about the role of place in the past. I think. You should give it a listen and decide for yourself what it's about. The nice thing about R.E.M. is that they just give you some images, and it's up to you to make sense of it, or just enjoy not knowing what it means at all.

One of my biggest surprises in researching my genealogy was how quintessentially American it was. I'm not sure what I'd expected - maybe a nice immigration story, with some spicy European culture. It would have been cool to have found out that I was part Italian, for example. I wanted to find a little Italian grandma coming to Ellis Island in her shawl. I wanted some cultural identity to sink my teeth into.

I didn't find that at all. What I found was deep American roots.

This blog will be a way of sharing my family's story. I hope you enjoy it.
